Building Commissioning Association (BCxA) Annual Conference
Chicagoland, IL
September 25-27, 2019

Miles Ryan presented on the topic of Common Pitfalls in High-Rise Domestic Hot Water Recirculating Systems. Additionally, he authored a supporting conference paper entitled Addressing PRVs in Domestic Hot Water Recirculating Systems. His presentation and paper identified common mistakes made in the design, construction and operation of high-rise domestic hot water recirculating systems, which result in building owners paying for the operation of a system which ends up not meeting its intended purpose. The resultant poor performance of such systems is often not reported in many commercial high-rise applications, which makes initial commissioning of such systems even more important.

The presentation was well attended and included a lot of participation from the audience. In addition to the discussion on common shortcomings of such systems, attendees were also provided with a step-by-step process to use in analyzing such recirculating systems. This step-by-step process can be used to improve an engineer’s efficiency and effectiveness in performing such reviews.

When not presenting, Miles attended a variety of other sessions in the topics of healthcare commissioning and electrical system commissioning. He also attended several sessions where commercial real estate owners discussed experiences and best practices when it comes to commissioning their buildings.
